Bard Statlock is a brand of stabilization devices that help keep your indwellilng foley catheter secure and in the proper position. These adhesive foam pads have a swiveling clamp that holds the catheter tubing in place. The clamp allows you to freely move without causing uncomfortable tugging on the catheter. Bard stabilization devices have a patented locking system that makes them more effective than traditional medical tape. A foley catheter anchor can be worn for up to a week. The catheter stabilization devices we carry are suitable to use with silicone or latex foley catheters. Properly securing your foley catheter helps prevent excessive movement that can cause urethral damage and bladder spasms. Bard Statlock also makes similar devices that keep IV's and PICC catheters in place.
An indwelling catheter can also be secured using a narrow band that goes on the thigh. These bands are meant to stop Foley Catheters from shifting, which can cause discomfort. We carry adhesive bands that stick to the skin as well as velcro bands. The adhesive variety is a clear, latex-free strip that does not go around the entire leg. It is attached to the front of the thigh and the foley catheter tube sits under the tape for stability. Another type of foley stabilizer is a band that wraps completely around the upper thigh. It uses a velcro closure to hold the catheter in place and prevent excess movement. This variety does not utilize any adhesive, so it is ideal for people with sensitive skin. Both types of catheter holders are disposable and are designed for short-term use.
Leg bags are used to collect the urine that drains from a foley catheter or an external catheter, such as one from Bard Rochester. The catheter is joined to a connector, which attaches to extension tubing. Urine flows through the tubing and is contained in the leg bag. A leg bag is made of durable latex or vinyl that resists leaks and blocks odors. It is secured to the thigh or calf using straps or a fabric sleeve. Leg bags have a drain valve that allows you to empty urine from the bag when it is full. The drainage valve is designed so that urine will not flow back up the catheter tubing. We carry both disposable and resuable leg bags. A reusable leg bag can be used for up to six months with consistent, proper cleaning.
When using a leg bag, you will need to wear straps or a pouch-like holder to keep it in place throughout the day. Leg bag straps are fastened using buttons or velcro, and can be made of latex or fabric. They are available in different sizes based on the circumference of your leg. Leg bag straps can be washed and reused. Another option is a cloth leg bag holder. This is a fabric sleeve with a pocket that the leg bag slides into. It keeps the leg bag off of your skin for maximum comfort. Not all leg bags fit all straps and holders, so it is important to check the compatibility before buying. Please see our blog on how to choose leg bag holders and straps for more information.
It is important to make the catheter insertion process as sanitary as possible. A Foley Catheter Kit includes items such as gloves, a syringe, lubricant, and antiseptic solution. Using these supplies will help prevent urinary tract infections and other complications. Common antiseptics include BZK and povidone iodine, both of which disinfect the skin before inserting a catheter. Many of the antiseptics in the kits are in the form of pre-saturated swabsticks, which are convenient to use and are less messy. Some kits come with a foley catheter, while others do not. We also sell an insertion tray that includes an overnight catheter bag.
