How to Lubricate Your Catheter

Always prioritize doctor recommendations for your catheterization process.

  1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water; dry completely. Put on clean gloves if available.
  2. Open the catheter package without touching the insertion tip. Keep the catheter on its sterile wrap as a work surface.
  3. Open one side of the single-use packet of lubricating jelly, either by hand or with scissors for a more precise cut.
  4. Squeeze a small amount of lubricant onto the first 2–4 inches of the catheter tip. Spread evenly and use enough to fully coat the tip, but avoid large globs that can obscure the urethral opening.
  5. Open the opposite side of the packet. Holding the catheter by the funnel end and off any surfaces, insert it into the packet, rotating it while moving down the tube to ensure complete lubrication.
  6. Proceed with the standard cathing process.
  7. After use, dispose of the single-use catheter and lubricant packet per local instructions. Wash hands again.
