3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film Protects Stomal Skin

3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film When you have an ostomy you will be using an ostomy wafer and pouch system every day. The ostomy system uses adhesive to keep the ostomy wafer secured around your stoma. The adhesive over time can cause skin irritation. Your skin can become damaged due to prolonged periods of adhesive use or exposure to stomal output from leaking ostomy appliances. It is important to know how to protect damaged and irritated skin.

The best way to address some of these injuries is to prevent them from the start.  3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film offers one of the best proactive approaches to dealing with skin care. 3M Cavilon is a skin prep that forms a barrier between your skin and anything it comes into contact with, like adhesive or stomal output. The main function of skin prep is to prevent skin breakdown/maceration and irritation of the skin before it becomes a problem. 3M Cavilon No Sting aims to protect at-risk skin, like the skin surrounding your stoma, by not only helping to prevent skin problems but by preventing them as well.

As anyone who has removed a Band-Aid or adhesive bandage knows, it hurts when you pull the adhesive from the skin. This discomfort is because every time you remove adhesive bandages from your skin, you are also removing the very top layer of skin as well. Doing this occasionally is not a big deal, the skin repairs itself and no real harm is done. However, removing adhesives or ostomy appliances daily from the same area can lead to constant irritation, damaged skin, and if left untreated can lead to infection.

Alcohol-Free Means 3M Cavilon is Sting Free

3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film is an alcohol-free liquid barrier that forms a fast-drying barrier coating to protect damaged skin from adhesives and bodily fluids. The film protects but it is still breathable and remains transparent so you can still monitor your skin. 3M Cavilon No Sting is hypoallergenic and non-cytotoxic so it won't interfere with skin or wound healing.  3M Cavilon is alcohol free, it will not sting even damaged or denuded skin. The barrier film is available in individually packaged sterile wipes or a spray bottle. Both varieties contain the same product, it is just personal preference if you prefer the wipes or the spray.

3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film can be used to protect both intact as well as damaged skin from bodily fluids, adhesives and friction, incontinence, peristomal protection, periwound protection, and peritube protection.  It is great for offering protection against adhesive trauma due to ostomies, wound therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, and protection from IV locations as well. This product is a great addition to your first-aid kit as well. Before using any product on a wound remember to test the product on a small area of your undamaged skin. You will want to make sure you don't have a negative reaction to the product. If any irritation develops cease using the product. This is true of any product, not everything works for every person. Make sure it works for you before you spray a large section of damaged skin with it.

How to Use 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film:

  1. For best results, skin should be clean and completely dry prior to the application of the skin prep
  2. Apply barrier film evenly over the entire area surrounding the stoma
  3. If you miss a spot, reapply to that specific area after your first application has dried, which should take around 30 seconds
  4. If Cavilon No Sting is applied to an area with skin folds or an area that has "skin-to-skin" contact, make sure that the skin contact areas are separated to allow the film to dry completely and then return skin to normal position
  5. When you use Cavilon under adhesive tapes, dressings, or ostomy appliances allow the product to dry completely before it is covered
  6. Each time your ostomy system is changed you will need  to reapply Cavilon No Sting skin prep
